This adventure novel tells the story of a young sailor named Dick Sand; though only fifteen, he is forced by tragic circumstances to become the captain of the ship *Pilgrim*.
During the voyage, the ship faces grave danger: the experienced captain dies, and Dick must take responsibility for the lives of the passengers and the crew.
Due to the treachery of the criminal Negoro, the ship goes off course and, instead of America, ends up in Africa, where the characters encounter the slave trade, the wilderness, and numerous trials.
Dick Sand displays courage, intelligence, and strength of spirit to save his friends and return home.
